This painting belongs to the Meninas series, which Puigmarti created between 2006 and 2008. This collection, inspired by the famous work by Velazquez, was developed in parallel to his famous Alien Fashion series, and has many similarities with it.

These are works that show his taste for gestures and non-premeditated painting. In the character’s clothing we can observe the freedom and spontaneity with which it has been created. In turn, we find eyes camouflaged among the folds of the clothing. The eye is the icon most used by Puigmarti at all times, but especially in the works created after the year 2000. In the Meninas series, it is striking that many of them have a certain sinister resemblance, a common feature in many works of the artist.

Puigmarti’s works from the last period are always characterized by having been created in a thoughtless, spontaneous and automatic way, in short, in a very surreal way. The Meninas series shows us full-length characters in which we find a great technical display, an overflowing creativity and many areas decorated with that spontaneous filigree that characterizes them.
