Exhibition of paintings by Mercedes Lasarte at Hotel Estela Barcelona – Hotel del Arte in Sitges – Summer 2025
THE EVENT
The Hotel Estela Barcelona – Hotel del Arte from Sitges is hosting the painting exhibition by the artist Mercedes Lasarte. The opening will take place on Thursday, August 7th at 7:30 pm in the Iris Gallery Restaurant of the artistic hotel. At 9:00 pm, visitors may enjoy dinner with the artist. The exhibition will remain open to the public until the end of September.
THE ARTIST
Mercedes Lasarte is an artist with extensive experience spanning several decades dedicated to her painting. The artist is originally from Buenos Aires (Argentina) but lives in Los Angeles (USA), where she has her residence and her art gallery / studio. She can also be found regularly in Punta del Este (Uruguay), where she also runs her own art gallery, or on the Catalan Costa Brava. So, we could say that she is a citizen of the world, since she has travelled to many countries with her paintings.
As a result of these travels, her works are part of important public and private collections around the world, being the Carmen Thyssen Collection –the private collection of Baroness Thyssen– the most prominent to which her works are part. In fact, Mercedes Lasarte and the Baroness share a strong friendship forged in the 1970’s. Mrs. Carmen Cervera’s collection consists of more than one hundred works by Lasarte that decorate different spaces in her private domicile.

From an artistic point of view, Lasarte is a referential artist with an impressive curriculum. She is a unique artist with a very personal style that brings together different artistic movements to integrate and adapt them to her own way of understanding painting.
THE WORK
Without a doubt, when observing her creations, what most attracts our attention is her very forceful and bold use of colour. These are flat colours, without gradients. Furthermore, these colours are often altered from reality. This way of extending and altering colours reminds us of early 20th-century Fauvism.

Similarly, in her creations we appreciate certain naive references mixed with aromas of classical avant-garde movements. Also striking in her works is the absence of perspective and depth: the elements that make up the composition are all placed on the same plane, yet maintain an intelligible order. Lasarte’s references include Matisse and Gauguin, among others. However, the artist has developed her style freely and individually.
Her themes are very varied, but the most common ones show still lifes with fruit and/or flowers, portraits, everyday scenes with human figures, minimalist landscapes by the moonlight, and she even creates abstract compositions based on colours and a mixture of straight lines and undulating shapes.

In short, an artist who presents a genuine and “fresh” work with a unique style supported by vibrant colours, who is capable of satisfying the palates of both those more versed in art and those unfamiliar with it.
