Josep Maria Pahissa presents the paintings from his “Evolution” collection at the Hotel del Arte in Sitges. The opening of this exhibition will take place on Friday, September 20th, 2024 at 7:30 p.m. in the Iris Gallery Restaurant of the artistic hotel located next to La Marina beach and the Port d’Aiguadolç. The exhibition can be visited until the end of November.
Pahissa is a restless artist, very versatile and endowed with overflowing creativity. These factors, together with his extraordinary mastery of the drawing technique, have always led him to make countless delicate sketches on small pieces of paper that he executes almost compulsively, giving free rein to all his creative abilities. We could say that Pahissa feels fulfilled, artistically speaking, when he can release the entire creative universe that he treasures inside through the aforementioned sketches.
Years ago, his artistic mentor, the prominent art critic Juan Llop, encouraged him to transfer those sketches to the format of a painting. Without a doubt, Juan Llop’s good eye already knew then about the great artistic and creative value that they had.
Pahissa listened to the advice and got to work beginning to transfer these drafts to the canvas and creating a series of paintings which we could say that represent his latest evolution. In fact, the artist himself decided to group this collection under the title of “Evolution”.
Currently, the Barcelona artist develops a pictorial work that we could describe as avant-garde, supported by his own iconography and style, which receives constructivist influences and in a very particular way from the master Wassily Kandinsky, resorting to the frequent use of pure forms such as squares and circles. In his creations we can also see areas of kineticism in groups of lines that form structures and, in particular, spheres that, when observed closely, cause a vibration in the retina that is accentuated by the movement of the spectator. Lines and spheres often form schematic characters. Pahissa’s works are therefore situated between geometric abstraction and kinetic art, but with a figurative component.
The constant evolution of the artist, his creative freedom and his search for new iconographic elements and new themes result in a dynamic work that manages to place and interrelate pure geometric forms with other more organic and biomorphic ones, straight lines with sinuous ones, formal language with personal language, reflective act versus automatic act. Similarly, in some of his works we can see a certain socio-political criticism expressed in a subtle way, giving a real vision of the polyvalence of this creator.
In this exhibition, panels with dozens of sketches that inspire Josep Maria Pahissa’s pictorial work will also be displayed, some of which have already been transferred to canvas or board.
In short, a versatile artist with an avant-garde work that surprises the viewer with the variety of technical, thematic and stylistic resources that he presents.
This exhibition has the collaboration of the Josep Puigmartí Foundation.
